Microsoft to junk some flagship products (eWEEK)
Microsoft will stop selling some versions of its flagship software products after Dec. 15. Among the affected offerings are Windows 98, SQL Server 7 and different versions of Office 2000. The phasing-out program was announced on Microsoft's site for developers, which also mentioned Windows NT 4.0, but didn't make it clear whether it too would be part of the Dec. 15 deadline.

IT SURVIVAL KIT
Terminating a system administrator
Do you have a policy for how to handle the sudden termination of a key system administrator? It's not a task many security teams are eager to handle -- especially on smaller teams where it involves planning for the firing of one of your own. However, you owe it to your organization to plan for this distasteful eventuality. This tip takes a look at a few steps you can follow to ease the process.

ASK THE EXPERT, JERRY HONEYCUTT
How do I reduce roaming profile size?
Dear Jerry:
How can I reduce roaming profile size? I want users to keep a profile of 15 MB so that new software keeps the application data outside of the profile. Currently we use Windows NT and many users can't log out because new software like Netscape and Adobe puts a lot of data in the application folder of the roaming folder.

IT certifications: Five are hot, five are not
Here's what certification guru Ed Tittel says are today's hottest and coldest IT certifications. "Hottest" are certs that are most likely to appear in classified ads, job postings and IT certification wish lists. Likewise, "coldest" are those credentials with the weakest growth, those that have gotten negative press, or those in which IT professionals have shown the least interest.

THE MISSING LINK
'Space Invaders' to re-invade the arcade

If you've got unfinished business with the aliens from "Space Invaders," your revenge is at hand. The Japanese company that developed the game back in 1978 is re-releasing it. The company plans to sell 10,000 of the freestanding arcade machines in the United States. "Space Invaders" was all the rage in its day, kidnapping countless quarters from kids' pockets. A game in 2004, however, will cost two quarters -- a small price to pay when you're trying to save the universe. Let us hope this doesn't foretell a re-release of the 1990 film "Spaced Invaders."
