Windows NT 4.0 administrators who did all the right things in locking down their systems may actually experience more problems in upgrading to Windows Server 2003 than security slackers who have done little or nothing, according to one expert. Security evangelist Roberta Bragg outlines some of the problem areas for those making the switch in Windows Server 2003.

Microsoft preps Windows XP Service Pack 2 (CRN)
Microsoft will release a test version of its Service Pack 2 for Windows XP in the next week, according to one report. The service pack, which is expected to offer improved patch management and a number of security enhancements, is scheduled to be released in its final form sometime in first half of 2004.

Mystery patch blots Microsoft's fix-free month (ZDNet)
A patch inadvertantly issued this week through the Windows Update service means that Microsoft will not have a patch-free month in December after all. Executives for the software maker are trying to figure out why a patch to plug a security hole in FrontPage was reissued Tuesday night.
