    by Vandana Sharma, Assistant Editor

Happy New Year to all of you and congratulations to December's tip contest winners! Despite the busy holiday season, many of you managed to find time to submit tips for our monthly contest. Here's a quick look at our latest Hall of Fame inductees:

  • 1st place: Easily administer Win2k Pro in an NT domain by Jessica Elliott
Are you struggling to administer Windows 2000 in an NT domain? Perhaps you've implemented local group policies, but now need to edit them. Or perhaps you don't have Active Directory so you can't just push it out to all computers. So how do you administer your domain without physically touching every PC?

  • 2nd place: Remove Windows password for home users by Ken Steffes
Sometimes users working at home don't want to enter a password for Windows XP. Although it is not the most secure idea, you can change settings for certain users so Windows doesn't ask for a password at startup.

  • 3rd place: Easily remove .tmp files by Alpesh Nakar
All programs and applications create .tmp files. It's really important to remove them on a regular basis, especially on a network. Here's a quick batch file that can make the process easier.

As manager of the SearchWin2000.com tip contest, I want to remind you to keep those tips coming. You could be next month's winner! Send me your hottest Windows-related IT tips and become eligible to win our monthly tip contest prize. Our past prizes have included popular tech gadgets such as CD/MP3 players, digital voice recorders, webcams and wireless stereo headphones. If you've submitted a tip in the past and haven't yet won, why not start fresh this new year and try for January's super contest prize: an iRiver iFP-190T 256 MB digital audio player!

     Expert Technical Advice:

    Featured Expert: Serdar Yegulalp
Categories: Desktop Administration, Management Tools & Solutions

    Dear Serdar:
I have a question about virtual memory on Windows 2000 desktop machines. What are the standards for setting the paging file size? For instance, if my initial paging file size is 768, then what should the maximum size area be set to?

    Site Exclusives:
    >> Jarring jargon -- IT never at a loss for words
If IT were to be charged with one crime, it should be abuse of the English language. Who is to blame for these "words" -- words that should be kept at the bottom of an extensible repository rather than at the top of one's mission-critical vocabulary? These bad words leave many of us speechless.

    >> Microsoft-sponsored user group nears launch
Some final details need to be worked out, but a nonprofit organization designed by Microsoft to better serve regional user groups is nearing reality.

    >> Oops! True IT blooper #122: A printer finds a thief
Business system analyst Steven T. Fricke explains why if you're stealing from your company, you should really cover your tracks. Here's Fricke's tale about how a printer accidentally caught the company thief.

Tip of the Week: System patching made easy
By now you've heard of the HFNetChk command line tool distributed by Microsoft and its GUI replacement, the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA). Well, the company that designed the core structure of these tools, Shavlik Technologies, has an updated version of HFNetChk that you should seriously consider employing.
