Over the past decade or so, e-mail has become an absolute necessity in the workplace. It's gotten so important, in fact, that many are stopped dead in their tracks if the e-mail server goes down. It's hard to believe that just 10 years ago many offices didn't even have e-mail. But they also didn't have SPAM...or the Klez-H virus...or employees forwarding chain letters to their 10 closest friends in order to avoid 7 years of bad luck.

In short, interoffice messaging has changed quite drastically over the years. IT managers are now responsible for making important messaging decisions that will affect their company's future. When purchasing messaging products, you must consider things like storage, security, spam and privacy. That's a lot of decisions to make, especially when you're on a tight budget.

At TechTarget's newest conference, Enterprise Messaging Decisions 2004, we can help you make those decisions. We've recruited industry experts to offer their opinions on which direction you should head with your messaging strategy for 2004 and 2005. If you plan on making any messaging purchases over the next few years, this is a conference you cannot afford to miss. We'll help you decide what types of products are right for you and where you should plan to spend your messaging dollars.

This is a hot new conference and space is limited. Qualify now and we'll waive the $1,495 registration fee. You'll get a front row seat to see experts such as:

    • Sara Radicati, President & CEO of The Radicati Group and a leading industry expert in messaging and collaboration. She will provide you with a detailed analysis of the costs of spam, both in terms of the IT infrastructure as well as the on-going operational costs.
    • Mark Minasi, best-selling author. Mark has got the "no-bull" story on the Longhorn operating system release from soup to nuts.
    • Scott Nathan, an attorney whose practice is focused on technology-related matters. Do you have strict e-mail policies at your organization? Have you been asked to dig up an employee's e-mail history and wondered if it's legal to do so? Scott Nathan will give you the answers to these questions and let you know the legal truth about monitoring and privacy issues you need in place at your organization.

Don't be left scouring the web at the last minute, trying to make sense of thousands of biased opinions. Register now for Enterprise Messaging Decisions 2004 in Chicago. Get the answers you need to make the most informed decisions. And while you're at it, be sure to send this to 10 of your closest friends or you may be in for seven years of really bad luck.

    Dear Roberta:
I have a GPO set on my domain and a password policy set to a minimum of eight characters in length. My boss wants me to add a check to make sure that at least three characters are changed when the passwords expire. Can that be done?

    Site Exclusives:
    >> MS tool lets Windows play nice with rivals
Microsoft is dangling a free version of its Services for Unix product in front of users in hopes of gaining a foothold in the data center.
    >> New AD tool brings users 'back from the dead'
A new version of Aelita Software's Active Directory recovery product will give AD users another option for reconstituting deleted objects online.
    >> ScriptLogic gets AD expertise with Small Wonders deal
ScriptLogic has acquired Small Wonders Software, a maker of software designed to assist IT administrators with Windows Server and Active Directory installations. One expert says there's little wonder about what ScriptLogic hopes to get from buying Small Wonders.

    Tip of the Week:
Creating new groups in Active Directory is accomplished in much the same manner as creating a new user or a new OU. Simply right-click on the OU that will contain the new group in the Active Directory Users and Computers console and select New, Group from the pop-up menu. Next provide the group name, select a group type, and select a group scope. Once the group is created you can manage its memberships. Easy, right? Not so fast, once the group is created you will need to make a few decisions that will affect how the group works. This tip helps explain your options.
