TROUBLESHOOTING REGISTRY-RELATED TASKS
By Rand Morimoto, Kenton Gardinier and Michael Noel

The registry is the heart of the Windows operating system, but if you
aren't careful, working with it can lead to a comatose OS. To ensure
that the heart of your finely tuned OS stays healthy you need to be
proficient in deducing registry errors and backing up and restoring
the registry. This tip takes a look at the various methods of

WHEN WINXP WON'T BOOT AFTER A NEW DEVICE OR SERVICE INSTALL
By Bill Downey

If you install a service or hardware device that is not compatible
with Windows XP, you might receive an error message when you try to
restart the computer. This message refers to the service or file
(device driver) that's causing the problem.

MOVE THE PAGEFILE AND GO FASTER
By Rick Cook

The pagefile is a critical component of the virtual memory system in
Windows. However it can also become a critical bottleneck in the
performance of Windows systems. Because it expands and contracts with
the use of virtual memory, the pagefile is an especially active piece
of disk space.

HDD DELAY | Ask Serdar Yegulalp

Dear Serdar,

I recently formatted and installed Windows XP on my work PC. Since
then the call logging software we use on the help desk's performance
has run down to that of a snail. It only appears to be the call
logging software, (HEAT by FrontRange Solutions) whenever it attempts
to access the database using standard SQL statements the HDD thrashes
for about four seconds. I've removed and reinstalled all related
drivers and software, removed and recreated the SQL data source, and
all of these steps have had no effect. The system seems to have no
other issues. We've done a clean install of Windows XP on a second
machine and had the same problem occur. Can you suggest anything?
