MS risks alienating users, Gartner says (vnunet)
The Software Assurance contracts of about 30% of Microsoft's largest customers will be up in the next three months, and the software maker risks losing many of them unless it can prove the value of the software-licensing program, according to Gartner Inc. WINDOWS WORD CHALLENGE
A drive-by download to teach a lesson
Initially carried out to illustrate the problem of lax security, this was launched six months after Microsoft released a patch for the flaw. Like its malicious counterpart, it could propagate across networks exponentially and perform its tasks without user knowledge or consent, through a process sometimes called a drive-by download. According to some, such invasive behavior is warranted because many system administrators fail to install
appropriate patches and service packs, despite knowledge of vulnerabilities and available solutions.

IT SURVIVAL KIT
Power to the user (well, just a little)
Windows 2000 users normally do not have the right to change the default power schemes that are set up on a PC. The only way to allow them to change power schemes is to grant them administrator access. This normally cannot happen for security reasons. But there is a solution to this problem that doesn't involve putting users into the administrator group.

Survey links Midas touch and a woman's touch

So much for it being a man's world -- unless maybe you're in IT. A nonprofit group that studies women in business found that companies with female higher-ups perform better than those with only men in charge. But in IT, the link between female executives and company success isn't as strong. Also, in IT, the number of women in top management positions is below the overall average.
