First exploit surfaces from leaked Windows code (BetaNews)
The first exploit from the leaked Windows source code has appeared, but the damage appears to be contained to an older version of Internet Explorer. According to one security posting, a specially created bitmap can be used to remotely cause a buffer overflow and then execute arbitrary code. Microsoft says the exploit would only affect IE 5. The vulnerability has already been fixed in IE 6 Service Pack 1.

NEWS
Linux evaluations may help drive Microsoft price cuts (USA Today)
Formal evaluations of Linux desktop systems may help customers get Microsoft to give them product discounts, according to one consultancy. The British firm Netproject recently helped the London borough of Newham try out a Linux system. Rather than lose them to Linux, Microsoft offered the borough a 30% discount on Windows and Office upgrades. Netproject says evaluations conducted in secret may help customers snare even deeper discounts when the results are tallied and presented to the software maker.

IT SURVIVAL KIT
Customize default user profiles
When different users log on locally to the same Windows computer, Windows uses the factory-supplied default user profile as a template to create a profile for each newly logged-on user. However, with a little work it's possible to edit this custom default profile, so that the administrator can provide customizations to the default profile that all users can share.

THE MISSING LINK
Jet for sale online -- some assembly required

Time's running out. If you want your very own used Navy F/A-18A Hornet jet fighter, and you have some extra space in your garage (not to mention your checking account), get on over to eBay. A broker in Washington state has listed the jet, which used to belong to the Blue Angels, on the auction site. It costs a mere million, but if you want it assembled and ready to fly, that'll add another $8 million to the price. This puppy can fly 1,400 mph and climb nearly six miles in a minute -- much more impressive than a Jetta. Yes, this deal appears to be legal.
