There was a lot of reminiscing last week as IBM celebrated 40 years of mainframe computing. It got me thinking about another anniversary -- it was 10 years ago this month since the founding of Netscape.
In April 1994, Jim Clark, who founded Silicon Graphics, and Marc Andreessen, who helped create the NCSA Mosaic software -- and whose GUI helped to simplify Internet navigation -- launched Netscape. The Mountain View, Calif., company had its initial public offering only 16 months after its founding, and it was truly the IPO that ushered in the era of the dot-com.
And as the saying goes, the rest is history.
At North Carolina's Research Triangle Park, IBM created a computer for big businesses, but 40 years later, look how much computing has changed. The Web as we know it is only 10 years old and we can't imagine what twists and turns we are in for as far as Internet computing is concerned.
But IBM today is still a computer manufacturing powerhouse. Sadly, Netscape is no more. It was gobbled up by AOL and Sun several years ago. It lost the famous, albeit meaningless, browser war with Microsoft. And right about that same time, the dot-com bubble burst. But Netscape's place in Internet history cannot be denied.
One of our sister sites, Search390.com, asked mainframers then and now to tell tales about where they were 40 years ago. The results are fascinating. Let's do the same thing. Where were you 10 years ago when the browser hit it big? If you were already a Windows administrator, did you imagine the impact that Netscape would have on your job?

| Tip of the Week: |
| In certain environments, you may want to track changes to the registry by users without explicitly forbidding them. One way to do this is through Windows' own built-in registry auditing function, which logs any registry changes (or accesses) made by a user to the system log. |
