Tilting at Microsoft security windmills
By Douglas R. Spindler, Special to SearchWin2000.com

I'm the administrator of a midsized network -- 6,000 users -- and due to who we are, we are always under attack from remote hackers. But over the past year, there have been three major attacks on our network that have come from within.
I can't tell you the number of hours we spend each year keeping machines up to date with the latest virus signatures and patches, as well as educating users and squelching the outbreaks. What I can tell you is that we have been completely paralyzed for days by a single worm. No printing, no access to files and no logins, as we verified that each machine was patched. In a computing environment where we provide 24/7 service, this is not acceptable.

Ask the Expert: Does Windows 2000 support writing to CD/DVD-RW media?
Dear Laura:
I am using a Windows 2000 system until I can restore my own Windows XP HE system. When I attempt to burn a disk for backup, etc., the system sees the drive, but does not see the media installed and continues to ask for it. I presume something is "shut off." How do I resolve this?

It's 2 a.m. Somewhere in Britain. The main system at a 24-hour service facility crashes. The "main man" is called in. A cuppa (British for a cup of tea) is waiting for said "main man" upon his arrival. Let's see where the tale takes us, as we enter...The Blooper Zone.
