Microsoft: Palladium lives
[InternetNews.com]
Have rumors of Palladium's death been greatly exaggerated? Microsoft officials said this week that contrary to a published report, the Next-Generation Secure Computing Base (NGSCB), as Palladium is now called, is "alive and kicking" and "moving full steam ahead," although it is being tweaked. NGSCB is supposed to provide the security foundation for Longhorn.
Analyst predicts Longhorn will be a real pain
[The Inquirer]
When you upgrade to Longhorn, be sure you have plenty of Tylenol and Icy Hot. According to a Gartner analyst, it's going to be a painful upgrade thanks to the new user interface, new APIs, new file system and so forth. He thinks Longhorn will be mainstream by 2008 -- he also thinks at least 30% of Microsoft customers will not renew their enterprise agreements between now and next year.
Some older systems left out of 64-bit loop
[eWEEK]
When Microsoft's 64-bit client is released, a few systems will be left on the outside looking in. Older systems like 16-bit support, the OS/2 subsystem and the portable operating-system interface for Unix will not be included, according to MS officials. Several legacy transport protocols will also be left out.

The Missing Link: Breaking up is easy to do -- via SMS
[Reuters]
Last week we learned what text addicts the Brits are. Now we know what some of those messages say: "We R thru" or "C U NevR." In a recent poll, about 10% of Britons admitted they had text messaged a "Dear Nigel" letter to their significant other. Of course, that cold digital dumping could come as the result of another survey finding -- that nearly three out of four Brits read their sweetie's private messages.
