Microsoft pings testers for IM upgrade

Microsoft is getting into the "ping" of things today, announcing upgrade plans for its enterprise IM server. MS will start taking beta test applications for Live Communications Server 2005. The beta version should be out this summer with the final release coming in Q4. MS says the new version will allow for IM chats and presence information outside the corporate firewall.

Red Hat to doff desktop strategy

The Missing Link: Fight to the Finnish -- bank closes to stymie Sasser

Sasser isn't exactly a "disasser" just yet, but one of Finland's foremost financial firms took no chances. Sampo, the third largest bank in Finland, closed all 130 of its branch offices Monday just to make sure its systems didn't get "sassed." A Sampo spokesman said that the company had not updated its virus protection and decided it was safer to close shop for the day while IT did its thing.
