Microsoft has spent a lot of time at WinHEC talking about 64-bit computing, Windows' role in the high-tech homes of tomorrow and so forth. But at one conference session, a MS exec said that the company still needs to do a much better job on the fundamentals -- namely security -- and that XP SP2 would deliver security enhancements. In a separate session, Jim Allchin confirmed that a beta of Longhorn will ship in 2005.

Sixty-four seems to be the magic number for Bill Gates. He talked for an hour at WinHEC about how 64-bit computing has almost arrived on the desktop and that hardware makers should start writing 64-bit drivers for their software ASAP.
