Symantec CEO hits Microsoft -- and Linux
[Silicon.com]
Symantec CEO John Thompson says he is not fazed by Microsoft's entry into the antivirus software market because it has a lack of experience in the market. Thompson said in a public appearance, "We don't do game boxes and we don't do operating systems. We do security." He did, however, defend Microsoft against the "myth" that it is less secure than Linux. Thompson argued that Microsoft is simply a bigger -- and therefore more attractive -- target.

Lindows scores victory over Microsoft

A Dutch court has ruled that Linspire's use of the brand name Lindows does not violate Microsoft's Windows trademark. The court ordered Microsoft to pay the equivalent of $1,160 to Linspire. Are you an underpaid systems admin, a tech specialist ready to tar and feather a user or an IT manager trying to get your boss' job? Here are some tips and advice that can enrich your job or help get you the one you want.

TIPS: Restricting cached credentials
Windows operating systems cache the logon credentials for the last 10 users. If users later log on using their cached credentials, they are using out-of-date security credentials. New group memberships, changes to GPOs, changes to user rights, etc. are not applied. This is a serious threat to any truly secured environment. Read this tip to find out how to disable cached credentials and protect your OS.

The Missing Link
The Missing Link: When outsourcing attacks
[The Register]
If you're going to outsource, make sure your nose is super clean. More importantly, make sure your computer is super clean and your hard drive is fully clothed. Bank of Ireland CEO Michael Soden quit last week after admitting he looked at adult Web sites on his office computer. It turns out, the people who found the smut (during "routine maintenance") are the same irate IT people Soden outsourced to Hewlett-Packard. Evidently, they didn't want to be HP employees and lose their cool bank perks. Could they have been out to get the CEO? Who knows, but one thing is for certain -- you won't read this in any of HP's outsourcing brochures.
