Active Directory's backdoor: ownership
[James Michael Stewart]
Ownership is a concept that is often overlooked, pushed aside, or outright forgotten when the security infrastructure of a network is designed and implemented. This is a serious security problem. This tip provides clues to when to start worrying, along with simple ways to plug the security holes.
Upgrading from 2000 domain to 2003 domain
[Ron Crumbaker]
Although upgrading to a 2003 domain from a 2000 domain is more straight-forward than going from NT 4.0, you must perform certain steps before you can run the 2003 Domain Controller Upgrade wizard under Configure My Server. Find out how to prepare the Windows 2000 Server Active Directory domain in this tip.
Restricting cached credentials
[James Michael Stewart]
Windows operating systems, including 2000, XP, and 2003, cache the logon credentials for the last 10 users. This allows for the user to re-logon at a later date even if the domain controller cannot be accessed at the time of logon. While this does represent a fault tolerance to DC downtime and network congestion, it is a poor state of security. Find out what the most secure settings are in this tip.
