Enabling information workers to connect with peers, business processes, and information in real-time raises the productivity of an organization and reduces maintenance costs for networks and communications channels. Microsoft(R) Office Live Communications Server 2003 Standard Edition enables information workers to take advantage of real-time communications to increase productivity without compromising the security and manageability of enterprise networks. As part of the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server offering, Microsoft provided customers with one of the first enterprise IM services available: Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging Service (Exchange IM). Although Exchange IM has met the needs of many customers, the underlying protocol for the service, Rendezvous Protocol (RVP), is proprietary and does not provide an extensible platform for other types of real-time communications. Because industry standards for IM have evolved, Microsoft decided to base the design of Live Communications Server on the industry standard Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). SIP allows Live Communications Server to provide more security, deeper extensibility, and broader interoperability with solutions ranging from line of business (LOB) to homegrown to Customer Response Management (CRM) applications. Live Communications Server uses SIP to effectively deliver presence information--the ability to see whether people are online and available to communicate--and supports real-time communications through text, audio, video, and data. Live Communications Server also provides application programming interfaces (APIs) for the creation of custom applications that take advantage of presence information and instant messaging.
