Windows Small Business Server 2003 installation issues
[by Serdar Yegulalp]
Windows Small Business Server 2003 (or WSBS2K3 for short) is a version of Windows 2003 Server designed to run in small network environments where there are no other domains and no domain trusts. Only one WSBS2K3 server can exist in a domain, and it must be the domain controller and Active Directory repository. However, when SBS is installed, it isn't automatically promoted to the status of a domain controller and doesn't have Active
Directory installed; the administrator has to do this manually. Learn how in this tip.

Understand the Real Benefits of Agent-Optional Monitoring
Most vendors trumpet the benefits of implementing either agentless monitoring or agent-based monitoring. In reality, you need both. Agent-Optional solutions allow you to centrally manage and select which servers are monitored locally with an agent and which servers are monitored remotely, helping your organization effectively sustain 100% uptime while reducing enterprise monitoring TCO.

Manually resetting AUTOCHK.EXE for a drive

Windows maintains a piece of metadata for each volume called the "dirty bit." The dirty bit is a flag that tells the system if there are still pending changes to be written to the volume. Read more about dirty bits in this tip.
Blocking spyware via the ActiveX kill bit
[Serdar Yegulalp]
Administrators trying to come up with a proactive way to block spyware from infesting workstations often have to make difficult choices. Restricting the functionality of IE to prevent spyware from taking root can be cumbersome. Third-party programs require installation and maintenance to be useful. Switching to another browser doesn't always resolve the problem, either, as there are now breeds of spyware that operate through
Netscape/Mozilla as well. Check out this registry hack which solves the problem without IE changes.
