Recently, SearchWin2000.com posted the results of its latest salary survey. And while it appears that the IT job market -- including the market for administrator positions -- has stabilized since the darkest days of the downturn, all is not well in IT.
Almost half of the survey's respondents reported that they were less satisfied with their jobs now than a year ago. That's a pretty sizable number of unhappy campers, which begs the question: Why are so many so dissatisfied?
Since most online surveys are limited in their ability to get detailed responses, I'd be happy to open my inbox to IT professionals who'd like to share their thoughts on the subject. And in return, if I get enough feedback, I'll pass along those thoughts in a letters-to-the-editor article. (Anonymity is yours for the asking. Initials are fine.)
In the meantime, feel free to take our newest salary survey. It gets refreshed every six months, and the job data from your peers is available to you right away.

Dear Laura,
I have a server on my desk as a computer technician handling a LAN. Can I use this server once in a while to play CDs, type documents using MS Word, or edit photos using Photoshop? Or are servers supposed to be only dedicated to servicing client (computers) and not to be used as an ordinary desktop computer? What possible problems may occur, if any?
Read Laura's response.

| Tip of the Week: |
| The cumulative result of the priority application of Group Policy is known as the effective policy or Resultant Set of Policy (RSoP). The RSoP can be seen by using the gpresult tool, the RSoP snap-in for the MMC or through the Help and Support Center. James Michael Stewart explains how to view the RSoP and what it can be used for. |
