Have you heard the one about the customer who bought a new VT220 terminal and failed to plug it into a power outlet? Furious, he called tech support and was gravely insulted when they suggested he check the power plug. How do you approach this? You can try to reason and potentially lose a million-dollar customer, or you can offer up a big, fat lie and save yourself a ton of grief. As seen in this hilarious
story, evidence points to the latter being the preferable approach.
Speaking of angry users, this story explains why Grizzly-sized managers and tiny PDAs don't mix well. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem -- unless you get physically stuck between the two. Ouch! Another amazing but true story is about the tech support guys who played a prank on the 'technologically challenged' marketer.
Unfortunately, it turned out the whole marketing department was equally challenged, so the prank backfired in a major way as it spiraled out of control.
There's plenty more where these came from, and you can browse them all in the True IT Blooper archive. We have 150+ of the dumbest, zaniest and funniest IT goofs and missteps imaginable, available for whenever you have had a bad day and need a good laugh.
But we want to hear YOUR best IT Blooper! Surely, you've witnessed -- or perhaps been the main character of -- a tale so funny and/or absurd it must be shared. Now is the time to send it in! In addition to the glory, we're giving away a $100 Amazon.com gift certificate to the best submission. And yes, you can be anonymous -- just be sure to include your contact info so we can send the gift certificate in case you
win.
Regards,
Matt Danielsson

Dear Tony,
I am having a problem with our Web server. A pop-up says that the dllhost.exe has created an error. When I look in the application event log there are numerous Active Server Pages Event 5 errors. These have the line 0 out of memory in the error message. This was happening every couple of days, but is now happening every hour or so. After a re-boot it's fine for a while. Have you seen this?
Read Tony's response.

Datawarehouse building: How would you engage a scattered userbase?
An ITKnowledge Exchange user recently asked, "We are currently building a datawarehouse and will need to engage the customers in order to successfully specify the datamarts, a search functionality, etc. All of the technicalities are scoped and being put in place. The question hence directs itself to successfully engaging the customer base, without whose input this could never be successful. Some of the customers were easy to contact, but some 500 customers are scattered around the globe in
different user pockets. How would you suggest we tackle engaging these customer pockets?" See how your peers responded.
