Microsoft levels the playing field for patch notices
By John Hogan, Senior News Editor

Psst. Want the scoop on what's in Microsoft's security bulletin this month? Well, you no longer have to be a select customer to get that kind of information.

From now on, Redmond has declared, security notifications will be publicly available on its Web site three business days ahead of Patch Tuesday, which is the second Tuesday of each month.

Microsoft said the move is designed to help IT organizations better plan for patch deployments. The security summaries will give a general description of the vulnerabilities that will be patched, but details will be withheld to prevent bad guys from using the early notice as a head start on exploits.

Click here to read more about the early notification program, as well as for a wrap-up of the week's Windows news.

Tip of the Day: PsPasswd: A free password-changing utility
Strong password policies are one of the many cornerstones of good administrative practice. That said, if an administrator is responsible for several dozen machines, all of which need to have a password rotated regularly, the process of manually providing new passwords for each machine can be tiresome.
