For all those moments when you've complained about a lack of choice in the desktop operating system environment, well, now there is a choice. Novell Inc. this week released its integrated, full featured desktop, with manageability software to boot. The cost is $50 per system, which includes upgrades and updates for one year.

But will it sell? If so, then to whom?

Novell's Linux Desktop 9 runs on SuSE Linux. It's got all the enterprise class training and support that Novell can muster. Novell's CEO Jack Messman isn't positioning the package as a Windows replacement, but as a possibility where an open-source desktop can be a sensible alternative.

As we've reported recently, the number of companies who have publicly considered Linux on the desktop is tiny. In October, AT&T became the latest to suggest that it was giving Linux a fair hearing along with Windows and the Apple Macintosh.

Gartner Inc. says that by 2008, Linux desktops will only encompass about 3.4% of the overall desktop market. But who knows if that will change now. What's different about a Novell entry into the market is that customers don't have to worry about getting support from an unknown, fly-by-night vendor. Just about any established enterprise today has some familiarity with Novell and Netware.

If you are considering giving Novell's Linux Desktop 9 a test drive, we'd be interested in hearing from you. Send your e-mail here: [EMAIL PROTECTED].

    Tip of the Week:
Windows Server 2003 has a number of built-in tools for gathering performance information for both hardware and the operating system's own services. Unfortunately, getting useful and cohesive reports about system performance from these tools can be a real chore. To that end, Microsoft has recently released a tool called the Microsoft Service Performance Advisor for Windows Server 2003.
