Our blooper contest has entered the final stretch, but there is still time to get a shot at the $100 Amazon.com gift certificate we're giving away. I have to warn you though -- competition is stiff!
The latest addition tells the story of when a VP -- whose main accomplishment to date was figuring out which side of his CD-ROMs should be up when inserted into the drive --gathered the entire IT department to explain his brilliant vision for how things should work around there. If that doesn't make you cringe, just wait until he gets technical with concepts like "tomorrow's technology" and wins the
grand Foot-In-Mouth award of all times. Click here for the full story.
Then there was the nurse at a major hospital whose computer had a medical emergency. Amazingly, this was NOT a case of virus infection. However, it was breathing hard, and as a good samaritan the nurse couldn't just turn her back on its suffering. Her solution? Click here to find out.
Another instant classic is the Texas state employee who had her computer equipment moved from one office to another. Unfortunately, the movers weren't as thorough as she would have liked. She had to plug set everything up herself, and when that didn't work she took it upon herself to go into troubleshooting mode. That's when things got ugly, and when she finally called in a guy from
the IT department it cost him a hot breakfast sandwich in the process.
There's plenty more where these came from - we've got more than 150 amazing but true bloopers in our blooper archive. But we want to hear YOUR best story! You have until November 30 to submit your own blooper for a $100 Amazon.com gift certificate. Don't worry, you can be anonymous, but be sure to include your
contact information so that we can send your gift certificate in case you win.
Best regards,
Matt Danielsson

Dear Laura,
I have a Windows 2000 server that was built from spare parts. It finally died so I tried to put the hard drive in a Compaq 510 Desktop. Needless to say, I got a blue screen because of the new hardware. My question is: How can I use this hard drive in the new computer?

Career tip: When is it time to get out of tech?
They've put in the 60-hour weeks, logged in from home, and subscribed to the American overwork ethic. They've moved up to management, and they've been on the cutting edge. Then they walked away. As more IT professionals leave tech by choice or due to economic conditions, they're finding new ways to pay the mortgage.

NetworkView: Re-discover your network topology
If you find yourself faced with a network topology that's changed enormously since the last time you surveyed it, or one which isn't correctly documented, don't despair. Instead of auditing every machine in the network by hand, try saving time with a program such as NetworkView. |
