Microsoft to begin patch testing program

Microsoft is making the Security Update Validation Program a formal part of its software patch testing process after a yearlong pilot project. No new customer-participants need apply, however.

Microsoft previews Avalon graphics engine

Microsoft has offered an early public look at the new Windows graphics and presentation engine. A beta for Avalon is expected this year, and the technology is expected to be available as an add-on to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 next year. Avalon is also a key part of the plans for the Longhorn version of Windows.

The tech-savvy name was bestowed upon a newborn as a show of gratitude by the child's parents, who met and married thanks to the Internet. There's no word yet on how long it will take grade-school bullies to chase the poor sap out of the schoolyard and onto the psychiatrist's couch, but washed up B-movie star Yahoo Serious is available for counseling should it be needed.
