From the Editor: Weigh in on new Exchange plans
[Margie Semilof]

Dave Thompson has been responsible for Microsoft's Exchange Server product line for just about one year now and during that year he has completely re-jiggered the messaging platform's strategy. Gone is the next-generation, big bang release that was to feature new database technology and instead there is a next-generation release that may lack the drama of "Kodiak" but has some strong features nonetheless.

Thompson, Microsoft's corporate vice president for Exchange Server product group, says data replication, 64-bit support, and support for unified messaging are just some of what's on tap for the next release.

For some administrators, this is just the ticket. It makes for a smooth transition for the many enterprise IT admins who are loathe to roll out product releases with big architectural changes. For other administrators, who may have wanted common data storage technologies across multiple platforms, it may be something of a disappointment.

We'd like to hear from you. What are the pros and cons of the new Exchange strategy?
