FROM THE EDITOR Windows Genuine Advantage [by Marilyn Cohodas] Microsoft product licensing has been the bane of IT managers and administrators ever since the company changed its volume licensing program and rolled out Software Assurance three years ago. We thought the dust had pretty much settled until we ran a seemingly innocuous announcement that Microsoft would, later this year, require customers to have the authenticity of their copies of Windows checked before they could download security updates from the software company's Web site. Reader interest in the article was off the charts. And in our follow up this past week, we're happy to report that the new Windows Genuine Advantage program -- aimed largely at consumers -- will be at most a nuisance for some enterprise IT customers. In a broader sense, though, the requirement raises an important side issues that does significantly impact the enterprise: How to protect the corporate IT infrastructure from the growing numbers of employees who work from home on their own PCs.
