Is there any one on the list that is really up on installing new

The python-mac list is a good source of advice, too:
http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/pythonmac-sig
My short version:
* If you want a generally "mac-like" experience:
Use the binary installs from Python.org -- pay attention to PPC/Intel
and 32/64 bit -- there are four (4!) different architectures for OS-X,
and none of the Python builds support them all. So:
If you want to support older systems, particularly if you want to
distribute app bundles, use the 32 bit (10.3) version. If not, then use
the newer, Intel-only version.
Many third-party packages support these builds with binaries.
* If you are a 8nix person and want a *nix experience:
Macports is a good bet -- you get python, and a bunch of packages as
part of the deal. Not as good if you want to re-distribute, and _maybe_
not as good for GUI apps.
