If you are having problems with PIL, try Pillow:
https://pypi.python.org/pypi/Pillow
Read the fine print for the dependencies you need pre-installed that pip
does not manage for you (on OSX, brew is recommended):
libjpeg
zlib
libtiff
libfreetype
littlecms
libwebp
If using brew, read the fine print about editing setup.py and/or
setup.cfg to indicate where you are having brew put binaries.
