Thanks.  All good-sounding suggestions, except that they don't have the
desired effect.

The XFree86 log reports 'Option "Display" not used'.

Moreover, enabling 'Option "crt_screen"' has no effect either.

Finally, the problem occurs even in virtual consoles.

In all cases, Fn-F8 switches between the flat panel and the external
monitor, but there is no mode where the display appears on both devices.
This is annoying when you want to use the laptop with a projector, but you
can't see the flat panel when the projected display is on the wall behind
you, and you can't project if you have the flat panel on.

In Win2k, the display manager has a software setting that drives both
displays simultaneously.  This is the mode I'm after.
