try adding to the /etc/lilo.conf append statemnet:
append="vga=XXX"
Where XXX is the correct mode (eg: 791 for 16 bit, 1024x768) Usually found
in the Framebuffer HOWTO. As an added benefit, you get one or more cute
penguins (one per processor) on bootup.
