After getting the error I tried to compile it into the kernel (received same
error) then I enabled it as a module and ensured that Loadable Module
support was enabled in "make Xconfig" (defaults to yes).
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.4-graham.img 2.4.4-graham
this is the command I used (listed in the Linux Gazette - step 20).
I have since tried Mike's suggestion and got a little further, but still not
there.

What were the exact steps you took after make xconfig? Did you compile the
Advansys card as a module (M) or in the kernel (Y) in xconfig? What
mkinitrd command are you using, and where?
