TIVO is running linux on all their boxes.  The CPU is a PPC.

I think the FAQ may be slightly out of date.  

A couple of the Samba developers are real involved in the tivo hacks.
you can upgrade your hard drive, add ethernet, get a shell prompt over
serial, ppp over serial, run a webserver over ppp or ethernet to select
programs etc.

This is the real deinition of hacking(not cracking).  Tivo has not
discouraged the hacks. (no official support either)
