I can only speak for my own company, but IMHO an open-source drop-in
replacement for MS Exchange server, capable of serving the scheduler and
addressbook stuff in Outlook etc. along with the email part would open up a
LOT of opportunities to replace NT servers in small/medium businesses where
replacing the desktop OS is not an option today.
On the desktop side of things, I think the MS Office suite with its
"standard" file formats doc/xls/ppt is the most important area that needs
work. The typical end user doesn't care if it's called "Windows" or "Linux"
as long as the word processor menus are *identical* and files can be moved
between the two.
