For some reason, you have a default route already when not connected
to the Internet. That's why you get this upon dialup:

Remove your default route to eth0, and upon dialup pppd will be able
to create a default route to your remote access router.

Thanks Michael, that did the trick. BUT I still get this message at boot and 
if I tail kppp: Jul 18 22:03:46 ernie kernel: Sorry: masquerading timeouts

what is this? Is it a problem?
