Thanks for the clues, Yes I do have the anonftp package installed, and have
uninstalled & reinstalled it. but it still does not allow me to login, it
just givs me the error
"530 Login incorrect"
"Login failed"
Any further clues ?

And also check /etc/xinet.d/wu-ftpd and run "service xinetd restart"
if you modify that file.
