loop back is not there ?

I hope someone can help me the loob back settings on my machine left and I
dont know how and I have been trying to put them back like ifconfig lo
127.0.0.1.  And they say they are there then I reboot and they are gone
again.  Can some one tell me if this is fixable or if I screwed it all up.
