xfmail satisfies most of these requirements:

I don't understand what this means.

Yes. I move my deleted mail to the trash folder, but that's optional.

Yes. You can set timers for how often this happens. You can also set some
folders to NOT be updated. Very useful for trash.

> - 3 way frames - folders/mail in current folder selection/preview
Yes. I have set mine so that I don't get the preview. Can choose either.

LDAP, yes. Palm sync, no (unfortunately).

Yes. I have one imap account and 2 pop accounts.

Meaning what? You can set the fonts to use in multiple places in the program.
In the message listing, unread, read and deleted mail can be displayed in
different colors. Different folders can be displayed in different colors.
Quoted text can be displayed in different colors.

No. Bang!

I use stunnel for this.

Yes.

There is also pgp and gpg support (but no S/MIME yet); filtering for incoming
and outgoing mail (only with pop); spell checker; multiple language support
(but no 2-byte characters); posting to news (but no reading); other stuff I
can't remember right now.

It wasn't that she had a rose in her teeth, exactly. It was more like
the rose and the teeth were in the same glass.
