Just my $0.02:
Mylex's AcceleRAID cards are cheap and supported on Linux. A friend uses an
AcceleRAID 250.

If $500 is your absolute max, the WD/Promise package is probably your only
choice.

However, if you can put together a few more bucks, consider bidding on an
AMI
firmware RAID card on E-bay
(http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1262283044). Or try
to
find a Dell PERC2 card. Either will work perfectly with Linux or any other
OS.
