Hello again,

        THAT did the trick ;-) When booting the laptop on the AC
        power, CPU detection is just fine. On the other hand,
        booting the PC on its own battery will decrease the "cpu
        MHz" seen in `cat /proc/cpuinfo' !

        I've no explanation, but this workaround is just accep-
