By default, autofs isn't configured to manage /net, in part because
support for mounting hierarchies (which is what usually is needed for
/net to work as expected) isn't implemented in autofs 3.  The am-utils
package can handle this, though.

Install am-utils, run "/sbin/service amd start", and you should be
able to poke around in /net/hostname without difficulty.
