Yes, those are "rotated" logs.

I looked inside the log file and see that there are logs such as bootlog1,
bootlog2 bootlog3, and bootlog4. There is also that series for maillog,
cron, spooler, messages, secure, and xferlog. Are these the normal logs
that are supposed to be there?

Perhaps you stopped crond on your machine?
There's a cron task (logrotate) that rotates the logs periodically, so /var
is not filled by logs.

Larry,
You are absolutely right. df -h revealed that /var is filled to
capacity...absolutely no free space left. Being the amateur that I am,
would it be possible for you to give me a clue as to how I can move files
out of the /var directory to another directory? Or, better yet, is there a
way to allocate some of the free space that I have in another directory
into
the /var directory? I really appreciate your help.
Mike

I've never had, nor heard of, this problem myself, so I'm guessing
here -- maybe the partition which holds /var on your system out of
free space?

Here's why I'm guessing this:

-/etc/X11/xdm/GiveConsole is a very short script which does 2 things:
changes ownership of /dev/console and runs sessreg
(/usr/X11R6/bin/sessreg) which adds an entry to u/wtmp (in /var/log).
I'd expect this to fail if there is no free space in /var.

-the Win4Lin installer puts its files into /var/win4lin/, including
the win4lin rpms (which go into /var/win4lin/installer_tmp/). On the
machine I'm at right now, /var/win4lin has 138M of files. While
you've probably got less in your /var/win4lin directory (mine has the
downloads from several upgrades in it) -- it was probably enough to
fill up the remaining free space on that partition, precipitating the
problem you have now.

How to fix this? You need to get into this system -- use you favorite
rescue medium (your rescue disk, redhat CD, tomsrtbt, linuxcare BBC,
etc -- or maybe you can ssh/telnet it from another system?) to get
into the system and find out how much free space you have on the
partition which holds /var ("df -h"). If I guessed right, you won't
have any free space left on this partition, so you'll need to make
some. Move some of the files in /var to another partition or delete
some -- but be sure not to move/delete anything important.

If I guessed wrong then you'll need to get help from someone else.
Maybe somebody else on this list will have some better advice, or you
could try 2 other places:

-The netraverse techsupport web page
(http://www.netraverse.com/frame_index.php?screen=supporthome -- click
on the "ask a question" link to get an online tech support form to
fill out -- when I've had a question in the past, someone from
netraverse has answered quickly and accurately).

-The win4lin-users mailing list (sign up at
http://www.netraverse.com/support/maillists.php). This list has some
really knowledgable and helpful people on it (including several of the
netraverse people). It's a good resouce, and you may want to
subscribe to it anyway, if you decide to keep on using Win4Lin.

I hope this helps you out.
