I'd suggest you check that your CD-ROM drive is correctly connected to
your sound card. To play audio CDs, the data isn't usually "processed" by
the OS, it just goes straight out of the drive into the sound card through
a dedicated little wire.

Another thing to check would be the volume of your "CD" (as opposed to
"PCM"), since you can control the volume of the CD input on your
soundcard, but I don't know where that is in KDE... I use GNOME's "Audio
Mixer", or "aumix" in a console.
