thanks for this useful bit of advice Jakub. I didn't remove these the 
first time round and init still hung. I removed these and all went well.
I'm not sure why though. Can anyone explain? /lib/i686 is not in my 
/etc/ld.so.conf file and therefore I didn't think it would be used.
