I haven't done comparative benchmarking, but I'm happy with my 3Com 3C905B. 
 In addition I have read a couple of the Linux network driver developers 
opine (sorry, I can't point you to a quote) that the 3C905B/3C905C NICs are 
currently the "best".

(I would *very* much like to see a current comparison of PCMCIA/CardBus 
devices/drivers.  Anyone know where I can find one?)

BTW, you shouldn't have to force any config options in your driver.  The 
fact that the NIC isn't automatically detecting FD and linkspeed suggests a 
problem with your network.
