I'd like to set up my laptop to have the network work in any one of
four configurations:
* No network.
* Ethernet, via a pcmcia card.
* Modem, via an external modem.
* Both modem and ethernet.
I have found a few problems with the dialing configuration setup. I
have items one and two working just fine. I have problems with item
threee, and haven't tried four yet.
* When I set up an account, etc. in the "dialup configuration" program
on the Gnome desktop, I can make it work by dialing using the
"Debug" button on the program, provided I do the following wheezes:
* I have to manually copy in an appropriate resolve.conf. The DNS
servers I provide the "dialup configuration" program are not
written to resolve.conf.
* I have checked "Start and stop automatically", but I still have to
start with the "debug" button. The script runs until I see a line
indicating that pppd has started, and I get a good
connection. Fine. The window stays up, and I never get a message
indicating that pppd is working. If I hit "close", the connection
is shut down completely.
* If I use the "activate" button in netcfg, the system dials out and
logs in but never gets a good network connection. "ifconfig pp0" and
"route -n" produce the same results as though I had used the "debug"
button, with one exception: ppp0 is getting the IP address assigned
to eth0. Now, where the hell is that coming from?
* I also find that, while I was most careful to avoid indicating that
ppp0 should be brought up at boot, on reboot the system tries to
bring it up, and gets hung up at that point.
Thank you.
