Good hint, although I would use the "service" script for things like that. Simply running "httpd" as root gives exactly the same error message. The logs say I su'ed to root five seconds before that message (probably testing the "No job control thing"), but I'm certain *I* did not run "httpd". It probably got executed accidentally.
