Hmmm. This sounds like what I saw a couple of days ago and yesterday. The frist
lockup was nasty - I could not log back into my home account and ended up
deleting ALL my user files and restoring all but the initial files that were
loaded when I did the install. Yesterday, my machine locked up, with graphics on
the monitor. I could ping the machine, but could not ssh into it, nor do a
'CTL-ALT-BACKSPACE' or anything from the keyboard.

You can wait for a long, long, time and hope the machine comes back. : )

I am assuming you have down something to get the machine back by now (reset,
power down, etc.). This behaviour started right after I upgraded util-linux and
openssh. I have downgraded the util-linux package, and if my machine locks up
again, I will downgrade openssh, to see if that fixes the problem.

Did you upgrade util-linux?
