Could you be more specific?  "a problem with my connection" = ???

If you have a "linmodem", you must first have a special driver compiled for 
your kernel.

If you have a true modem, then see 'man wvdial'.  Red Hat's /usr/bin/rp3 is 
the best way to start/stop a wvdial modem connection.

There is an ISP-Hookup-HOWTO that might be of some interest, but Red Hat 
provides all of this functionality in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts.
