Glen ... i do just the same.I never used a  login manager in X , i use  console.
I beleive it has a zillion advantages, one of being able to do serious  work before 
i start the gadgetry of Gnome .. (  ok ill get  flamed  for it , but so be it .. :  ) 

i did the  modification  seems  to be  ok .

Speaking about  web browsing . i absolutely love  Dillo . 
Recently  a team  has put  together  what  might become  a viable alternative to the 
traditional browsers. For the moment Dillo is barebones.No cookies, not  even 
downloads.
But to just browse, it's so quick i cant beleive it and laugh at it.
Ok it is far from perfect but i beleive a good light and incredibly fast 
browser is really coming out of the noise .
