Shortly after posting this message, IceWM ceased to work as well. Gnome wouldn't run either. So I started to suspect that it might be a problem with X, and ran 'rpm --verify XFree86'. Sure enough, (ignoring all the configuration files) there was a library whose md5sum didn't check out. I think it was /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libcfb16.a. Freshening the XFree86 package fixed the problem.
I don't know how the file became corrupted--perhaps it was bogons? ;) Anyway, sorry for the wasted bandwidth...especially to the moderator who had to bother with passing my large message.
