Steve,

the two machines have two separate modems, connected to the same phone line.
They both dial correctly (one at a time, of course) , use identical /etc/resolv.conf 
files,
chat scripts, and the same ISP.

Basically I installed a bare-bone ENIGMA on my old laptop with internal modem
to test the distro, and when it connected OK I installed also on my desktop machine,
adding KDE/GNOME. Now laptop connects, laptop doesn't.
I have to finish one report now, right aftter I'll compare the firewall files. They 
are in
/etc/init.d, aren't they?
