Steve, the two machines have two separate modems, connected to the same phone line. They both dial correctly (one at a time, of course) , use identical /etc/resolv.conf files, chat scripts, and the same ISP. Basically I installed a bare-bone ENIGMA on my old laptop with internal modem to test the distro, and when it connected OK I installed also on my desktop machine, adding KDE/GNOME. Now laptop connects, laptop doesn't. I have to finish one report now, right aftter I'll compare the firewall files. They are in /etc/init.d, aren't they?
