not able to send mail from RH 7.1 - pls help

Hi folks……   I am pretty new to Linux…….I am not able to send mail from my RH 7.1 box.  It is my DNS server and so I would like it to send me mail regularly.  I have tried for example:   $ cat test.sh | mail root $ cat test.sh | mail –v root   none of these work……when I try pine…..that doesn’t work either….i don’t think it is in my path…..is there a way I can check to see if I have the configuration correct?   pls help
